What steps can be taken to ensure that the on-click feature does not require continuous mouse holding to remain active?

I'm working on getting my search boxes to change color when clicked, but currently it only changes color while I am holding down the mouse button. Once I release the cursor, it reverts back to its original color. How can I make it so that it changes color permanently until something else on the page is clicked (even white space), then it returns to its original color?

Here's an example:

Cheers!

consider

.search:focus

as opposed to

.search:active

If you're looking to achieve a specific effect, consider utilizing the HoverIntent JavaScript library. It could be a useful tool for accomplishing your goal.

I'm currently implementing this library to create a delay in displaying a tooltip when a user hovers over the search box. It provides a seamless and user-friendly experience.
