For more information on specifications, you can refer to: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-background/#the-background-size
<bg-size> = [ <length> | <percentage> | auto ]{1,2} | cover | contain
The values have specific meanings:
‘contain’
This scales the image while maintaining its intrinsic aspect ratio to fit inside the background positioning area.‘cover’
Scales the image with its intrinsic aspect ratio to completely cover the background positioning area.[ <length> | <percentage> | auto ]{1,2}
The first value signifies the width of the image and the second value represents the height. When only one value is given, the second is assumed to be ‘auto’.A percentage is relative to the background positioning area.
An ‘auto’ value for one dimension is determined using the image's intrinsic ratio and the size of the other dimension, or based on the image's intrinsic size, or treated as 100% if none are available.
If both values are ‘auto’, the image's intrinsic width and/or height should be used. If the image lacks intrinsic dimensions, its size will be determined as per the ‘contain’ method.
Negative values are not permissible.
