What sets apart Material UI's gutterBottom from a paragraph?

Can you explain the distinction between these two options?

While exploring the Typography Component API, I noticed that both the gutterBottom and paragraph props seem to serve the same purpose. If set to true, the margin bottom will be 0. You can find more information about this in the Component API documentation at this link: https://material-ui.com/api/typography/

Answer №1

There are a couple of distinctions to note.

Firstly, the difference lies in the css unit used. The em unit for gutterBottom is relative, where 1em is equal to the font-size of the parent component.

gutterBottom: {
    marginBottom: '0.35em',
},
paragraph: {
    marginBottom: 16,
},

Secondly, the paragraph attribute determines the basic component of Typography. If set to true, the Typography will be "p". If set to false, it defaults to specific options or else defaults to "span".

const Component =
    componentProp ||
    (paragraph ? 'p' : headlineMapping[variant] || defaultHeadlineMapping[variant]) ||
    'span';

Answer №2

While both may create a similar appearance (0.35em margin vs 16px margin), their focus lies more on semantics. Using the paragraph tag will generate a p element instead of a div element.

There is room for enhancement in the documentation. Please don't hesitate to raise any concerns or even submit a pull request.
