In general, the rich text editor typically offers a parameter to designate a style sheet. This style sheet is subsequently loaded and implemented on the textarea (Most rich text editors utilize an IFRAME for displaying the editor, meaning styles specified in the main document won't affect it.)
When the HTML is sent to the user, it appears as a textarea, but the editor converts it to a div upon initialization.
This setup ensures graceful degradation: Those with unsupported browsers or JavaScript disabled can still modify the text in the textarea, while everyone else benefits from an enhanced rich text editor.
