What is the reason that applying bg-dark on a Bootstrap navbar prevents the background-color from being applied?

Is it possible to change the background-color of a Bootstrap navbar by adding custom CSS? I have my own CSS file loaded after Bootstrap, so I assumed my styles would take precedence. However, when I try to apply a new background color to the navbar, it doesn't work unless I remove the existing bg-dark class from the <nav> element. Why does this happen even though my CSS is loaded after Bootstrap's?

.navbar {
  background-color: red;
}
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="e7858888939493958697a7d2c9d5c9d5">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-Zenh87qX5JnK2Jl0vWa8Ck2rdkQ2Bzep5IDxbcnCeuOxjzrPF/et3URy9Bv1WTRi" crossorigin="anonymous">

<nav class="navbar navbar-expand-md navbar-dark fixed-top bg-dark">
  <div class="container-fluid">
    <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Fixed navbar</a>
    <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarCollapse" aria-controls="navbarCollapse" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
      <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
    </button>
  </div>
</nav>

Answer №1

Upon inspecting the document, it becomes evident that Bootstrap's background color is enforced using a !important declaration, likely to overcome a cascade conflict. To address this issue, we must incorporate the same approach. However, merely adding it is insufficient as we require a selector of equal specificity. In this case, I have utilized .navbar.bg-dark, although body .navbar would serve the purpose as well.

An even more effective solution would involve crafting a custom class to enhance Bootstrap's background styles, such as .navbar.bg-vivid. This practice not only clarifies the applied styling for future reference but also aids other developers in understanding the modifications made.

.navbar.bg-dark,
.navbar.bg-vivid {
  background-color: red !important;
}
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="8eece1e1fafdfafceffecebba0bca0bc">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-Zenh87qX5JnK2Jl0vWa8Ck2rdkQ2Bzep5IDxbcnCeuOxjzrPF/et3URy9Bv1WTRi" crossorigin="anonymous">

<nav class="navbar navbar-expand-md navbar-dark bg-dark">
  <div class="container-fluid">
    <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar (original classes)</a>
    <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarCollapse" aria-controls="navbarCollapse" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
      <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
    </button>
  </div>
</nav>

<nav class="navbar navbar-expand-md navbar-dark bg-dark bg-vivid mt-2">
  <div class="container-fluid">
    <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Navbar (cusom background class)</a>
    <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarCollapse" aria-controls="navbarCollapse" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
      <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
    </button>
  </div>
</nav>
