What is the precise width?

Here's a question for you: an HTML element has the following styles applied to it - width: 150px, padding: 3px, border: 4px, margin: 7px. What is the actual width of the element?

I'm confused by this question because it specifies that the width is 150px... so why are they questioning it?

Any insights or thoughts on this?

Thank you in advance

Answer №1

In the absence of a declaration for box-sizing, padding does contribute to the width, as do borders.

So in the given example:

150px internal content width + 6px of padding (3px on each side) and 8px of border (4px on each side) = 164px.

The default setting for box-sizing is content-box

content-box .This style conforms to the CSS standard where the width and height properties are calculated based solely on the content, excluding padding, border, or margin. Note: Padding, border & margin will be outside of the box For example, if you have .box {width: 350px}; and then apply {border: 10px solid black;} the result rendered in the browser would be .box {width: 370px;}

MDN reference

div {
  width: 150px;
  height: 25px;
  margin: 7px;
  border: 4px solid red;
  padding: 3px;
  background:lightblue;
}
.nopadding {
  padding: 0;
  border-color:green;
}
.box {
  -webkit-box-sizing: border-box;
  -moz-box-sizing: border-box;
  box-sizing: border-box;
  border-color:rebeccapurple;
}
<div></div>

<div class="nopadding"></div>

<div class="box"></div>
