What is the best way to cover my entire image with a mask?

I'm struggling to figure out how to use Bootstrap-5 to get a mask to cover my entire image. Can anyone provide guidance on how to achieve this?

Here is the jsfiddle link and the code snippet:

<!-- Bootstrap-5 -->
<link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="27454848535453554657671209170915">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-EVSTQN3/azprG1Anm3QDgpJLIm9Nao0Yz1ztcQTwFspd3yD65VohhpuuCOmLASjC" crossorigin="anonymous">

<!-- Body -->
<div class="bg-image">
  <img src="https://mdbootstrap.com/img/new/standard/city/053.jpg" class="w-100" />
  <div class="mask" style="background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6)"></div>
</div>

Answer №1

Instead of cluttering your markup with a bunch of Bootstrap positioning classes, consider using custom CSS for better readability and maintainability. Avoid inline styles and opt for embedded or external stylesheets.

A common approach is to use a pseudo-element, eliminating the need for additional markup. In this example, Bootstrap's position-relative class is applied to the container without the need for a custom style rule.

<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="33515c5c47404741524373061d021d02">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-F3w7mX95PdgyTmZZMECAngseQB83DfGTowi0iMjiWaeVhAn4FJkqJByhZMI3AhiU" crossorigin="anonymous">

<style>
  .bg-image:after {
    content: '';
    position: absolute;
    left: 0;
    width: 100%;
    top: 0;
    height: 100%;
    background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6);
  }
</style>

<div class="bg-image position-relative">
  <img src="https://mdbootstrap.com/img/new/standard/city/053.jpg" class="w-100" />
</div>

Answer №2

If you want to create a overlay on an image, simply assign the class position-relative to the parent element.
Then, apply position-absolute along with top-0, end-0, bottom-0, and start-0 to the overlay.

By default, there is no need for a z-index.

<!-- Using Bootstrap 5 -->
<link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="afcdc0c0dbdcdbddcedfef9a819f819d">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-EVSTQN3/azprG1Anm3QDgpJLIm9Nao0Yz1ztcQTwFspd3yD65VohhpuuCOmLASjC" crossorigin="anonymous">

<!-- Overlay on Image -->
<div class="bg-image position-relative">
  <img src="https://mdbootstrap.com/img/new/standard/city/053.jpg" class="w-100" />
  <div class="mask position-absolute top-0 end-0 bottom-0 start-0 " style="background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.6)"></div>
</div>

Answer №3

In order to achieve an overlay effect, you'll need to include the following CSS code:

.background-img {
   position: relative;
}

.overlay {
   position: absolute;
   width: 100%;
   height: 100%;
   left: 0px;
   top: 0px;
}

It's crucial to assign a position of relative to the .background-img class so that the child element .overlay behaves relative to it. Failing to do so will cause the overlay to cover the entire body.
