I have created a single page scrolling website specifically designed for children. The optimal viewing experience is at 1200 pixels wide. Is there a method to set the window size to that by default when visitors land on the site?

Instead of directly opening your desired page, consider creating a landing page with a button that triggers the opening of the page using window.open
. You can also specify the desired size of the window that opens.
For more information, check out this link. Here's a basic example of using window.open
within a click
handler:
window.open("http://example.com", "width=1200");
Keep in mind that this is just a suggestion to the browser and it may choose to ignore it. However, specifying a value within a certain range is usually accepted, while very small windows may be disallowed. You can also define the height, window features, and other options.
Ultimately, designing your page to be flexible and work well in various window sizes is preferable. Some users may find it annoying when websites try to dictate the width of their browser windows. :-)
If you want to create a custom-sized new window when a user clicks a link or button, you can do so by using the window.open
method like this:
<a href="some url"
onclick="window.open(this.href,'targetWindow',
'width=700px,
height=700px');
return false;">Open Popup</a>
Here are two different approaches you can take:
Both of these methods overlook potential issues related to enforcing a specific size on the user, such as:
Generally, it is advisable to design something that can adapt to various screen sizes, while also setting a reasonable minimum size. A resolution of 1024x768 is often considered a practical target. While this may not be ideal for mobile browsers, it seems you are primarily concerned with other devices.
