innerText
is actually not a method in jQuery; you should be using text
instead. In addition, the way you are transferring content from a hidden element to a span seems backwards. Instead of this:
$('#span').innerText($('#dropdown').val());
You should do this:
$('#dropdown').val($('#span').text());
