What causes an increase in td width when using CSS background-color?

Here is an example of HTML structure:

<table class="barby-barcode">
  <tbody>
    <tr class="barby-row">
      <td class="barby-cell on"></td>
      <td class="barby-cell on"></td>
      <td class="barby-cell on"></td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

This is the corresponding CSS:

table.barby-barcode { border-spacing: 0; }
tr.barby-row { height: 100px; }
td.barby-cell { width: 3px; height: 3px; }
td.barby-cell.on { background: #000; }

However, for some reason, the actual display shows td.barby-cell.on with a width of 5px. Why is the width increasing?

Answer №1

Initially, the use of "table", "tr" and similar elements is redundant. Simply using ".barby-[sth]" to define the class is sufficient.

Furthermore, it is essential to verify that the margin, padding, and border are all set to 0.
