What are the permissible child elements for an <a> tag?

Lately, I've been focused on structuring HTML code and it got me thinking about which elements are actually allowed as children of an <a> element. Can you help clarify?

Answer №1

Feel free to include any content as long as it does not contain interactive elements like buttons, forms, or other links...

Referencing the HTML5 specifications from w3.org :

The a element can encompass entire paragraphs, lists, tables, and even whole sections, as long as there is no interactive content within (such as buttons or links).

Here is an example showcasing how this can be implemented (taken from w3.org) :

<aside class="advertising">
    <h1>Advertising</h1>
    <a href="http://ad.example.com/?adid=1929&amp;pubid=1422">
        <section>
            <h1>Mellblomatic 9000!</h1>
            <p>Turn all your widgets into mellbloms!</p>
            <p>Only $9.99 plus shipping and handling.</p>
        </section>
    </a>
    <a href="http://ad.example.com/?adid=375&amp;pubid=1422">
        <section>
            <h1>The Mellblom Browser</h1>
            <p>Web browsing at the speed of light.</p>
            <p>No other browser goes faster!</p>
        </section>
    </a>
</aside>

Updates in HTML5

In previous versions of HTML, the a element was limited to containing phrasing content only. However, in HTML5, the a element is now transparent. This means that an instance of the a element can also include flow content, as long as the parent element allows for flow content.
