Ways to position one div below another div

I need the #blue div positioned below the #green div

The #blue div should have a margin-top: -10px; property

 <style>
    #red{
        width: 400px;

        border: 1px solid red;
    }
    #green{
        width: 100%;
        height: 100px;
        background-color: green;
        border-bottom: 2px solid yellow;
        z-index: 2;
    }
    #blue{
        width: 100%;
        height: 100px;
        background-color: blue;
        border-top: 2px solid brown;
        margin-top: -10px;
        z-index: 1;
    }
    </style>

<div id="red">
    <div id="green">
    </div>
    <div id="blue">
    </div>
</div>

Answer №1

To achieve the desired effect, consider applying position:absolute to the elements with IDs #blue and #green, while using position:relative for the element with ID #red. This will likely create the layering you need, with one element appearing behind the other. If the elements need to be adjacent, then apply relative positioning to all three elements.

Answer №2

There doesn't seem to be an issue with your code at first glance. Could you be referring to a situation where one div is hidden beneath another? In that case, adding the position: relative (or absolute) attribute to the desired div along with specifying top or left coordinates should do the trick. Here's an example:

#blue{
    /* z-index won't work without position: relative/absolute! */
    position:relative;
    /* moves the div up or down */
    top: -100px;
    /* moves the div left or right */
    left: 15px;
    width: 100%;
    height: 100px;
    background-color: blue;
    border-top: 2px solid brown;
    margin-top: -10px;
    z-index: 1;
}
