Ways to incorporate custom CSS alongside Bootstrap styling

Just starting out with CSS and HTML I've applied some Bootstrap styles to my HTML elements But when you use a bootstrap style, the class is automatically taken over. This means I can't add my own custom CSS styles. Is there any workaround for this dilemma? Is adding an ID to the element the only solution? Thanks a bunch.

Answer №1

Customizing bootstrap elements is easy with some built-in options like switching from bg-light to bg-dark. If you want to make additional changes, simply create a new class and adjust as needed.
For example:

<button type="button" class="btn btn-primary my-custom-style">Primary</button>
.my-custom-style
{
    background-color: white;
}

If your styles aren't applying, just add !important for higher precedence over bootstrap:

.my-custom-style
{
    background-color: white !important;
}

Answer №2

To enhance the styling of your website, create a new CSS file and include it in the head tag of your HTML document. Make sure to add your custom CSS rules to this file for a unique design. If there are specific styles that aren't being applied as expected, you can use the !important declaration to prioritize them.

body {
  background-color: #000 !important;
}
    <!--Bootstrap CSS -->
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.0/css/bootstrap.min.css" />

    <!-- Include Your Custom CSS File -->
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="your-file-css.css" />

Answer №3

To customize the default bootstrap styles, you can override them by following the instructions provided in the bootstrap documentation here. You will need to have Sass installed in your project folder if you choose this method. Alternatively, if you are using a simple CDN to incorporate bootstrap, just add the !important tag to your CSS properties like so:

    .btn-primary {
          background-color: red !important;
       }

Ensure that the Bootstrap CDN is included before your custom CSS file.

Answer №4

To ensure that a specific property takes precedence, the use of the !important rule is recommended.

For instance:

#header {
  background-color: green;
}

.sidebar {
  background-color: yellow;
}

h1 {
  color: blue !important;
}
