Utilizing HTML and JavaScript to dynamically switch stylesheets based on the width of

When it comes to using stylesheets for mobile and non-mobile devices, there is a need for different approaches. The idea of comparing browser height and width in JavaScript seems like a good one, but the implementation may not always work as expected.

    <script type="text/javascript">
function applyStyle() {
var $ = document; // shortcut
var mobile = 'mobile'; // encoding css path for id generation
var desktop = 'desktop'; //encoding css path for id generation
    if ($(window).height() > $(window).width()) {
    var head  = $.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    var link  = $.createElement('link');
    link.id   = mobile;
    link.rel  = 'stylesheet';
    link.type = 'text/css';
    link.href = 'css/interfacemobile.css';
    head.appendChild(link);
}
else {
    var head  = $.getElementsByTagName('head')[0];
    var link  = $.createElement('link');
    link.id   = desktop;
    link.rel  = 'stylesheet';
    link.type = 'text/css';
    link.href = 'css/interface.css';
    head.appendChild(link);
}}
</script>

</head>

<body>
<script type="text/javascript">
    applyStyle();
    </script>

If errors occur, such as improper script calling, it can be frustrating, especially for those less experienced with JavaScript. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated!

Edit: The attempt has been adjusted:

Answer №1

There seems to be a mistake here:

var $ = document; // shortcut

and next,

if ($(window).height() > $(window).width()) {

You have assigned $ as document, but treating it like jQuery.

Consider using window.innerHeight and window.innerWidth

Answer №2

If you're looking to make your website responsive, CSS media queries are the way to go:

<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (min-device-width: 700px)" href="css/narrow.css" />
<link rel='stylesheet' media='screen and (min-width: 701px) and (max-width: 900px)' href='css/medium.css' />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-device-width: 901px)" href="css/narrow.css" />

But if for some reason you prefer using JavaScript, here's an alternative:

function adjustStyle(width) {
    width = parseInt(width);

    if (width < 701) {
        $("#size-stylesheet").attr("href", "css/narrow.css");
    } else if ((width >= 701) && (width < 900)) {
        $("#size-stylesheet").attr("href", "css/medium.css");
    } else {
       $("#size-stylesheet").attr("href", "css/wide.css");
    }
}

$(function() {
    adjustStyle($(this).width());

    $(window).resize(function() {
        adjustStyle($(this).width());
    });
});
