Unclear about the concept of mobile responsive websites or similar

I recently came across a tool on http://skweezer.com/ that allows you to see how a website will appear on mobile browsers. I decided to test it out with the url http://sachindra149.wordpress.com/ and was shocked by the results.

1) Can someone explain why there is such a significant difference in appearance?

2) What could be causing this major discrepancy?

3) Additionally, what steps can be taken to improve the mobile display?

It's important to note that I do not have access to the web codes for the page, as it is a blog. I hope my question is clear! Thank you!

Answer №1

Instead of simply dumping pages to text, consider a more accurate representation of what mobile browsers do today. Unless you are specifically targeting low-end and older mobile devices, there's no need to be concerned.

However, if you are creating websites for such devices, here are some tips:

  • Avoid using generic blog hosting with limited control
  • Avoid incorporating tabular data
  • Avoid excessive chrome (such as large navigation bars or non-primary content)
  • Keep your content concise and focused
  • Test on actual mobile devices rather than relying solely on third-party emulators

Answer №2

First and foremost, the appearance may be deceiving. Although mobile devices have limited resources, they have significantly improved over time.

When viewing skweezer.com, you are seeing the unstyled text without complex HTML elements like CSS styling or tables. This results in a much faster site load and reduced data transfer. Your original site requires 320KB, while the skweezer version only needs 50KB - less than 1/6th of the size. Mobile browsing has become quicker and more cost-effective, but still lags behind desktop browsing in terms of speed and cost.

In terms of solutions, there aren't many options. You could opt for a design tailored for mobile devices, but testing it on all possible devices accessing your site is impractical. It might be best to trust the expertise of Wordpress designers as they can ensure your site looks good on most mobile devices.

Answer №3

Personally, I find it more effective to test websites on actual devices.

If you're limited in the number of physical devices available, utilizing a Chrome extension like this one can simulate how your website appears on different screen sizes.
