Tips for transferring simple CSS formatting to an independent stylesheet

As part of a university project, I am working on a basic website. Initially, I used in-line styling for the website design. However, the subject coordinator has now changed the requirements and we are only allowed to use an external CSS stylesheet. Most of my project has been successfully transferred, but I am facing difficulty with this particular div section (see attached).

I need help converting the CSS styling so that it seamlessly integrates into my CSS stylesheet. While not an expert in coding, it appears that the multiple div entries in my CSS may be conflicting with each other.

Answer №1

Make the div stand out with a new class

<div class="highlighted_section">
    <h1>Welcome to the Websystems</h1>
</div>

To style this div, add the following CSS rules in your external stylesheet

.highlighted_section
{
    background-color:#000000;
    padding: 15px;
    text-align: center;
}

And there you have it!

Answer №2

Have you heard of CSS Selectors? There are multiple ways to achieve this.

You have the option to utilize a class or an id. By assigning a specific class name to your div and styling it in your CSS file, you can customize how it looks:

HTML

<div class="your-custom-class">
    <h1>Welcome to the Fantastic Website</h1>
</div>

CSS

.your-custom-class {
    background-color: #000000;
    padding: 15px;
    text-align: center;
}
