Tips for creating a vintage, weathered font appearance on a web browser

Is it possible to create unique, randomly outwashed letters using a standard font? Instead of relying on pre-designed outwashed fonts available at , I am interested in achieving the same effect with a regular font that appears washed out when displayed in a browser.

I want the letters to look different each time they appear, as if they were handwritten by me rather than consistently uniform. Can this be done?

Answer №1

You have the option to utilize a transparent png image to create a splattered effect on top of the text. Here is a demonstration of how you can achieve this:

h1 {
font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 3em;
text-transform: uppercase;
position: relative;
}
h1:after {
content: '';
background-image: url(http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/vv11/Acetonium/splatmask.png);
background-size: 100% 100%;
background-position: -250px 35px;
position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
z-index: 1;
opacity:  0.9;
pointer-events: none;
}
<h1>This a header</h1>

Answer №2

No resolution seemed to hit the mark.

  • Employing an image resulted in the background being covered with sparkles rather than just on the text.
  • Any alternative method proved either incompatible with browsers, unattractive, or demanding too many resources.

The most viable option is to utilize a pre-existing handwritten font, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
