The CSS isn't loading properly once the file is uploaded to the server using FileZilla or cPanel

After uploading the file.css file to the server using both FileZilla and cPanel, I noticed that when I visit the website, the CSS is not being applied properly.

Specifically, I changed padding-left: 10px; However, upon viewing the Page source, it appears that the old file is still present.

What could be causing this issue?

Answer №1

To resolve the issue, attempt a hard refresh by pressing CTRL Shift R. This action will clear any cached files that may be causing the problem, unless the file is not uploading at all. If you notice the new file appearing in Filezilla, then it is likely a cache-related problem.

Answer №2

Make sure to verify the permissions for your CSS files.

The recommended permissions are 644 for files and 755 for folders.

Answer №3

Have you tried replacing or overwriting the current CSS file? It could be that the previous file is still in place, preventing the changes from being applied.

If you are using a content management system (CMS), it may have caching capabilities that delay the reflection of your updates. Try performing a hard refresh to see if that makes a difference.

Visit this link for more information on cleaning caches in apache2

For those using apache2, the "-i" option is a game-changer when dealing with cached files that don't update. If you're unable to utilize this option, a workaround is changing the href="styles.css" to href="styles.css?v=version2". This tricks the server into thinking there's a new file, prompting it to update the cache.

Answer №5

After renaming the .css file, removing the old one from the server, reuploading it, and then pointing the html to the newly named and uploaded css file, everything magically fell into place. It worked like a charm for some inexplicable reason.

Answer №6

If you're experiencing issues, the first step is to clear the cache. If that doesn't work, try linking your CSS as shown below:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css?v=0.001">

Following this method should resolve the problem.

Answer №7

If you happen to be utilizing nginx, it is possible that you accidentally removed the "include mime.types" directive from your nginx.conf file. To rectify this mistake, simply re-add it (the snippet below comes from Daniel Peterson):

http {
    include mime.types;
    ...

    server {
        listen: 80
        ...
    }

Once you've made changes to the configuration file and reloaded the nginx server, consider clearing your browser cache by pressing ctrl+f5.
