Tailwind - make sure the dropdown list is always on top of all other elements

Having an issue configuring the position of a dropdown list. The objective is to ensure it stays on top of all elements, however, when inside a relative positioned element, it ends up being obscured by it. Here's an example code snippet to illustrate my point.

Sample HTML:

  <div class="dropdown  relative">
    <button class="bg-gray-300 text-gray-700 font-semibold py-2 px-4 rounded inline-flex items-center">
      <span class="mr-1">Dropdown</span>
      <svg class="fill-current h-4 w-4" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 20 20"><path d="M9.293 12.95l.707.707L15.657 8l-1.414-1.414L10 10.828 5.757 6.586 4.343 8z"/> </svg>
    </button>
    <ul class="dropdown-menu absolute hidden text-gray-700 pt-1">
      <li class=""><a class="rounded-t bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">One</a></li>
      <li class=""><a class="bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">Two</a></li>
      <li class=""><a class="rounded-b bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">Three is the magic number</a></li>
    </ul>
  </div>
  <div class="dropdown relative">
    <button class="bg-gray-300 text-gray-700 font-semibold py-2 px-4 rounded inline-flex items-center">
      <span class="mr-1">Dropdown</span>
      <svg class="fill-current h-4 w-4" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 20 20"><path d="M9.293 12.95l.707.707L15.657 8l-1.414-1.414L10 10.828 5.757 6.586 4.343 8z"/> </svg>
    </button>
    <ul class="dropdown-menu absolute hidden text-gray-700 pt-1">
      <li class=""><a class="rounded-t bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">One</a></li>
      <li class=""><a class="bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">Two</a></li>
      <li class=""><a class="rounded-b bg-gray-200 hover:bg-gray-400 py-2 px-4 block whitespace-no-wrap" href="#">Three is the magic number</a></li>
    </ul>
  </div>

</div>

CSS:

.dropdown:hover .dropdown-menu {
  display: block;
}

Any suggestions on how to guarantee that the list remains above all other elements constantly? I've attempted using z-index without success.

Answer №1

To ensure proper layering of elements, make use of the z-index property for the <ul> tag. Within the framework known as Tailwind, there exists a range of classes that incorporate this specific rule.

In my implementation, I have included the class z-50.

<ul class="dropdown-menu absolute hidden text-gray-700 pt-1 z-50">
