Switching background images for DIVs when links are rolled over

Having trouble changing the background image of a div when a user hovers over a link.

Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?

<style>
#divToSwap {
    background-image: url(black.jpg);
    height: 150px;
    width: 150px;
}
</style>
</head>

<body>
<div id="divToSwap"></div>
<div>
<ul>
  <li><a href="#"
        onmouseover="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(red.jpg)';"
        onmouseout="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(black.jpg)';">
        Red</a></li>
  <li><a href="#"
        onmouseover="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(blue.jpg)';"
        onmouseout="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(black.jpg)';">
        Blue</a></li>
  <li><a href="#"
        onmouseover="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(green.jpg)';"
        onmouseout="document.getElementById('divToSwap').backgroundImage='url(black.jpg)';">
        Green</a></li>
</ul>
</div>

Answer №1

Consider experimenting with this sample code snippet:

document.getElementById('changeColor').style.backgroundImage='url(dark.jpg)';

Answer №2

Employ

document.querySelector('#divToSwap').style.backgroundImage=...

in place of

document.querySelector('#divToSwap').backgroundImage=....

Answer №3

The .property is not included:

onmouseleave="document.getElementById('elementToChange').style.color='blue';"
