Stylish CSS typography options for both Mac and Windows users

When browsing various websites, I've noticed that many of them showcase beautiful fonts without using images. Examples include The Firebug site and Happy Cog. It seems like web designers use CSS tricks and JavaScript to achieve this effect.

I'm curious about what is considered acceptable in terms of CSS/font practices. Are we still limited to a core set of common fonts, or are there new reliable techniques for displaying attractive fonts across Mac and Windows platforms?

Answer №2

If you're looking to use a specific font on your website, you can easily generate the necessary files using an online tool.

To integrate the font into your style sheet, include a code snippet like this:

@font-face {
    font-family: 'ArchitectsDaughterRegular';
    src: url('fonts/ArchitectsDaughter-webfont.eot');
    src: url('fonts/ArchitectsDaughter-webfont.eot?#iefix') format('embedded-opentype'),
         url('fonts/ArchitectsDaughter-webfont.woff') format('woff'),
         url('fonts/ArchitectsDaughter-webfont.ttf') format('truetype'),
         url('fonts/ArchitectsDaughter-webfont.svg#ArchitectsDaughterRegular') format('svg');
     font-weight: normal;
     font-style: normal;
}

Ensure that the URLs in the code point to the actual location of the font you wish to use. Additionally, there are plenty of pre-designed fonts readily available for use.
