Sending a value to CSS using a selector

Can CSS be instructed to implement a selector with a specific value that acts as a variable? For example:

-- HTML --
<div class-name="div-3"></div>

-- CSS --
.div-(x) {
  width: 100px * x;
}

Answer №1

Negative.

However, it is common to utilize a preprocessor like Sass (as well as Less and Stylus, and others) to simplify tasks of this nature. In Sass, you have the capability to iterate through numbers within a reasonable range and generate rulesets for each number. This would result in CSS that explicitly outlines each rule (.div-1 {...}, .div-2 {...}, and so forth).

In the future, it may be feasible to achieve a similar outcome using plain CSS, thanks to the attr function. While you may not be able to directly include the number within the class, you could potentially store it in a data-width attribute or similar. However, currently, the attr function is mainly valuable within the content property, which may not serve your specific needs in this context.
