This seems to present a conflicting situation. Ideally, I am looking to position two child elements on the left and right edges of the parent element, vertically centered, and overlaying all other sibling elements.
This seems to present a conflicting situation. Ideally, I am looking to position two child elements on the left and right edges of the parent element, vertically centered, and overlaying all other sibling elements.
If you want to position an element using CSS, you can utilize the properties left
and right
.
.child
{
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
}
.child .left
{
left: 0;
}
.child .right
{
right: 0;
}
Setting top: 50%
will align the top of the child element halfway down its parent. If the parent has a fixed size, consider using pixel units for more precision. Otherwise, JavaScript may be required for accurate positioning.
Update based on feedback:
To make the positioning relative to the parent container rather than the entire page, ensure that the parent element has position: relative;
set in its styles. The default value is static
, which will not produce the desired result in this scenario.
My understanding is as follows:
<div class="parent" style="position:absolute;height:70%;width:70%;top:15%;left:15%;background-color:#eee;border:solid blue 1px;">
<div class="left" style="position:absolute;width:30%;height:70%;top:15%;left:0%;background-color:black;z-index:20;">left box vertically aligned</div>
<div class="right" style="position:absolute;width:30%;height:70%;top:15%;left:70%;background-color:black;z-index:20;">right box vertically aligned</div>
</div>

If you assign lower z-index values to the elements below, they will be hidden beneath the 'left' and 'right' boxes.
Does this align with your intentions?
