Pasting a canvas over a div using CSS

My website features a <div> containing creatively styled rings with a design reminiscent of the android unlock pattern. The div showcases 9 dots that can be connected in various configurations. I'm looking to overlay a canvas on this setup to track and measure the user's drawing actions, allowing me to color the touched dots accordingly. What would be the most effective method for achieving this overlay?

Answer №1

To create a canvas overlay for drawing, assign { position: relative; } to your div and { position: absolute; } to your canvas. Ensure that the canvas is a child element of the div. Size your canvas to match your div, creating a transparent layer where you can freely draw graphics. Additionally, remember that canvases have a default transparent background, acting like a clear plastic sheet over your div for drawing lines and shapes. For styling circles, utilize CSS.

Answer №2

There are two methods that I have discovered

1) One approach is to utilize another nested div with a transparent background. Then, you can inherit the dimensions of the parent in the CSS

<div id='circles'>
   <div id='overlay'>

   </div>
</div>

CSS- #circles { width: 300px; height: 300px; }

 #circles div#overlay
 {
    width: inherit;
    height: inherit;
 }

2) Alternatively, you could create a separate DIV and position it absolutely. Then, use z-index in the CSS to overlay it

<div id='circles'>

</div>

<div id='overlay'>

</div>
