Is it still beneficial to incorporate image sprites in the design of a mobile web app?

As I work on developing a mobile web app, I find myself debating whether to use individual images or stick with image sprites similar to what I do for my desktop site. My main concern is the potential increase in file size from consolidating all the images and how that may impact the loading speed of my pages.

Answer №1

Utilizing a sprite set is totally fine, but it's important to note that when targeting an app for iPhones, they only cache files under 25kB in size. Therefore, if your image size increases significantly, it might actually be more beneficial to separate the images. This may result in more HTTP requests during the initial app launch, but will ultimately save bandwidth for both you and the iPhone user in the long run :). The same principle applies for JavaScript and CSS files as well :).

Answer №2

Most smartphones support sprites without any issues, except for older Nokia Series 40 and BlackBerry devices before version 6.0, as well as legacy devices lacking a full HTML 4.01 browser.

One thing to consider is that when using a flexible or responsive layout with predominantly flexible units, it may be challenging to accurately position the sprites while maintaining flexibility in the design.
