Back in the IE6 days, I developed an old application that relies on frames instead of iframes and runs in quirks mode. Now, I'm wondering if it's possible to have one frame remain in quirks mode while another operates in standards mode when using IE 7 or 8. Or does the entire browser need to be in one mode or the other?
I've attempted this without any luck.
I came across this answer, which pertains to iframes - but what about traditional frames?
In my opinion, frames and iframes offer different capabilities. As mentioned in the answer to the linked question, an iframe's target is not affected by its parent, while regular frames are dependent on the parent page. It seems that the two types of elements cannot be separated out easily.
It's interesting to note that Firefox determines its quirksmode behavior solely based on the doctype, as mentioned in the Mozilla Dev center.

If you use the old frameset doctype, it may trigger "almost standards" mode in Firefox, potentially resulting in quirksmode display.

To summarize, it's not feasible to activate quirks mode in a frame (or iframe) if the parent page is displaying in IE9 mode. However, you can still enable "quirks mode emulation" within the IE9 rendering engine.
