How can you gradually make a CSS border disappear?

Can an element's border fade away with the use of JavaScript only, without relying on jQuery for animation? We are currently working with Sencha and it seems that ExtJS only allows for animating element size and position. While CSS3 offers helpful animations, it doesn't seem to have a solution that fits our specific requirements.

Answer №1

Do you think this is what you're looking for?

div.slide {
  border: 5px solid rgba(0,0,0,1);
  height: 100px;
  width: 100px;
  background-color: #ffffff;

  -webkit-transition: border-color 1s linear; /* Saf3.2+, Chrome */
     -moz-transition: border-color 1s linear; /* FF3.7+ */
       -o-transition: border-color 1s linear; /* Opera 10.5 */
          transition: border-color 1s linear;
}

div.slide:hover {
  border-color: rgba(0,0,0,0);
}

Answer №2

Remember, transitions may not work in Opera (11.62) if you only specify border-color. Each border must be defined separately:

-o-transition: border-top-color 1s linear, border-right-color 1s linear, border-bottom-color 1s linear, border-left-color 1s linear;

This issue has been resolved in Opera 12.

Implement CSS3 transitions

.element_id {
-webkit-transition: all 1s ease-in-out;
-moz-transition: all 1s ease-in-out;
-o-transition: all 1s ease-in-out;
-ms-transition: all 1s ease-in-out;
transition: all 1s ease-in-out;
}
