From which location do browsers retrieve fonts?

Is the web browser able to access web fonts from sources other than the @font-face rule on the website itself? For example, can it retrieve fonts from the operating system's font collection?

Answer №1

When we talk about "web fonts," we're referring to fonts specifically designed for online use and loaded through the @font-face mechanism. This is essentially the primary way to incorporate web fonts into your CSS.

Fonts that are already installed on a user's device do not fall under the category of web fonts, as they are locally stored. Web safe fonts, on the other hand, are ones that designers can rely on being available across most—if not all—devices targeted. However, it's important to note that these may not align directly with what we consider "web fonts."
