Firefox failing to display fonts from Google Font API

The landing page our company outsourced does not display the Lato font in Firefox, resorting to a different option instead.

We have received a stylesheet from fonts.googleapis.com that includes the following:

@font-face {
  font-family: 'Lato';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 700;
  src: local('Lato Bold'), local('Lato-Bold'), url(https://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/lato/v6/wkfQbvfT_02e2IWO3yYueQ.woff) format('woff');
}
@font-face {
  font-family: 'Lato';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 100;
  src: local('Lato Hairline'), local('Lato-Hairline'), url(https://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/lato/v6/boeCNmOCCh-EWFLSfVffDg.woff) format('woff');
}
@font-face {
  font-family: 'Lato';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 300;
  src: local('Lato Light'), local('Lato-Light'), url(https://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/lato/v6/KT3KS9Aol4WfR6Vas8kNcg.woff) format('woff');
}
@font-face {
  font-family: 'Lato';
  font-style: normal;
  font-weight: 400;
  src: local('Lato Regular'), local('Lato-Regular'), url(https://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/lato/v6/9k-RPmcnxYEPm8CNFsH2gg.woff) format('woff');
}

This issue is specific to Firefox as IE, Chrome, Opera, and Safari all render the font correctly. Is there a particular reason why Firefox fails to display it?

Answer №1

After some investigation, I have successfully resolved the issue at hand. The NoScript add-on has proven to be quite effective in protecting against potential XSS attacks from Google, even when allowing access to the entire site.

I am currently looking into whether there is a specific setting within NoScript that will permit the use of fonts on the page. Once I have gathered more information, I will share my findings here for reference.

This situation should not pose any significant problems for our clients. Those who are utilizing NoScript themselves are likely not overly concerned about the font displayed on the landing page.

UPDATE:

To address the font display issue, I navigated to NoScript > Options, then proceeded to the Advanced tab followed by the XSS tab. I added the following exception to allow the desired fonts:

^https://themes\.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/lato/v6/[a-zA-Z\-_0-9]*\.woff$

While this exception may seem overly specific, adjustments can be made to accommodate additional site elements if necessary. For broader font accessibility, consider using a simplified exception like:

^https://themes\.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/[/a-zA-Z\-_0-9]*\.woff$

Have you been conducting your tests on your local machine, a development server, or a similar environment? To troubleshoot the issue, inspect Firebug's console for any errors related to the download process such as a 404 error, permission issues, or other similar problems.
