Ensure the div element remains fixed at the top of the page

I created a script to identify when I reach the navigation bar div element and then change its CSS to have a fixed position at the top. However, I am encountering an issue where instead of staying fixed, it jumps back to the beginning of the screen and flickers.

Javascript

        var currentScrollTop = 0;
        var barMenuOriginalTopPos = $('#navigation').offset().top;
        console.log('original:' + barMenuOriginalTopPos);
        $(window).scroll(function() {

            currentScrollTop = $(window).scrollTop();
            console.log(currentScrollTop);
            if(currentScrollTop >= barMenuOriginalTopPos && !$('#navigation').hasClass('fixElementToTop')){
                $('#navigation').addClass('fixElementToTop');
            }
            else if(currentScrollTop < barMenuOriginalTopPos && $('#navigation').hasClass('fixElementToTop') ){
                $('#navigation').removeClass('fixElementToTop');
            }
        });

CSS

.fixElementToTop { position: fixed; top:0; z-index:100;}

Why

Answer №1

Check out this jQuery plugin for a solution to prevent flickering:

$(document).ready(function() {
    $('#fixedElement').scrollToFixed({ marginTop: 0 });
});

Answer №2

a fixed CSS bar positioned at the top of the screen

<div style="position:fixed;top:10px;left:10px">Navigation bar</div>

Feedback:

I apologize for my misunderstanding of your original question. To prevent flickering, it is recommended to start the object with a fixed position. For example:

<div style="height:120px">XXX</div>
<div id="navigation" style="position: fixed; top:120; z-index:100;">Navigation</div>
<div class="win" style="border: 1px solid; height: 900px;"></div>

The provided code snippet:

$(window).scroll(function() {
    currentScrollTop = 120-$(window).scrollTop();
    console.log(currentScrollTop);
    if (currentScrollTop<0) currentScrollTop=0
    $("#navigation")[0].style.top=currentScrollTop+"px";
});

Answer №3

Update this particular line

var newTopPosition = $('#navigation').offset().top;

to be

var newTopPosition = $('#navigation').offset().top + 6;
