Develop a custom input field feature that utilizes both JavaScript and CSS

I really appreciate the feature that allows me to resize the textarea by simply clicking and dragging on the slanted lines in the lower right hand corner. However, I am looking for a way to apply CSS styles to text which is not possible with a textarea. I'm curious if there is a method to replicate the resizing functionality of a textarea using a different DOM element. This would allow me to customize the appearance of the text and any other content I insert. Any suggestions or assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

In my opinion, applying CSS to a text area is just like styling any other element. The only two elements that present challenges with CSS are file uploaders and select boxes.

For instance, take a look at http://codepen.io/cshaw/pen/YyVxRE for an illustration of a text area styled using basic CSS.

<style>
textarea {
border: 1px solid black;
background: green;
color: white;
padding: 10px;
width: 500px;
height: 300px;
}
</style>
<textarea name="yourTextarea">
  SOME CONTENT
</textarea>

If you need a resizable div instead, check out http://codepen.io/cshaw/pen/zvwdbB

<style>
div {
resize: both;
border: 1px solid #222;
width: 500px;
height: 200px;
overflow: auto;
background: #222;
color: #999;
padding: 10px;
}
</style>
<div>Resizable Div</div>

Answer №2

did you experiment with the css resize feature ??

div {
    border: 2px solid;
    padding: 20px;
    width: 300px;
    resize: both;
    overflow: auto;
}
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>

</head>
<body>

<p><b>Please Note:</b> Internet Explorer does not have support for the resize property.</p>

<div>Allow the user to adjust both the height and width of this div element.</div>

</body>
</html>
