Decrease the dimensions of the image while maintaining its width at 100%

I've got a dilemma with the images on my website that are linked from image hosting sites. They all need to be displayed at 100% width, but some of them have huge pixel dimensions which cause slow loading times. Is there a way to resize the images without losing the 100% width requirement in order to speed up the loading process? For instance, can I set the horizontal pixel limit to 1440px and adjust the vertical pixel accordingly while maintaining the 100% width?

Answer №1

Your ability to manage an image hosted elsewhere is limited. Here are some alternative suggestions:

  • Store them on a different server and retrieve from there
  • Preload for quicker loading times (unless the image appears "above the fold") How exactly does link rel="preload" work?
  • Utilize the <picture> tag to display a different image based on screen size: load images using the picture tag
  • Show a placeholder image initially: How to load a small placeholder image before loading the actual content

Answer №2

It is important to have two different versions of every image on your site - one in the original size for download requests, and another resized version for display purposes. This will help improve loading times and reduce data usage on your webpage.
