CSS Hover Any Other Element

Is it possible to apply CSS targeting the .drop class when hovering over the .categories class only?

Answer №1

div {
  width: 200px;
  height: 200px;
  float:left;
  margin: 10px;
  border: 1px solid #333;
}
.categories:hover ~ .drop {
  background-color: red;
}
<div class="categories">categories</div>
<div class="drop">drop</div>

I'm concerned that targeting an element up the DOM relative to the hovered element solely through CSS is not possible. However, this can be achieved using jQuery as shown below:

$('.categories').hover(function() {
    $('.drop').css({ // your code })
});

If the HTML structure were like this check snippet:

<div class="categories"></div>
<div class="drop"></div>

You would be able to use the following CSS rule:

.categories:hover ~ .drop {
    /* css rules */
}
