Can you explain the distinction between using ":" and "::" both before and after a word?

Can someone clarify whether I should use ":" or "::" before and after in this context? I'm curious if there's any distinction between the two.

Answer №1

In the realm of CSS3, the introduction of the ::before notation, featuring two colons, was meant to differentiate between pseudo-classes and pseudo-elements. Although browsers still recognize the :before notation from CSS 2.

Reference: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/::before

Given that before acts as a pseudo ELEMENT rather than a pseudo CLASS (such as :hover), adhering to the CSS3 standard with two colons is considered optimal.
