Are none of the page links clickable?

Currently, I am in the process of creating a portfolio website. This is my first attempt at coding HTML and CSS from scratch without the aid of a layout template. I've encountered an issue that has me stumped - the links within the container are not clickable. As a newbie to this, I'm unsure of how to resolve this problem.

My initial thought is that it may have something to do with z-indexing, but pinpointing the exact source of the problem remains a mystery to me. :s

Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Your HTML

<div id="welcome" class="tab-content fade in active">
    <a href="http://example.com"></a>
</div>

Your JS custom.js

$('#welcome a').click(function (e) {
  e.preventDefault() // <---- this is the reason why clicking it isn't working
