Adjust the height of a responsive div to match its adjacent element

Two of my divs are set to specific widths using percentages. I'm looking for a way to make the right div match the height of the left div, which changes based on the dimensions of an image and the browser window size. Is there a method to achieve this without relying on JavaScript?

Answer №1

To easily accomplish this task, you can position the .right div absolutely and set its top and bottom properties to 0.

Make sure to position the parent (.main) div relatively and remove any floats:

.right {
    bottom: 0;
    position: absolute;
    right: 0;
    top: 0;
}

.main {
    position: relative;
}

See it in action here: http://jsfiddle.net/5JU2t/1/

Important Note

If the right column appears longer in your design due to white space below an image, consider adding float: left to the image to correct this issue:

See updated example here: http://jsfiddle.net/5JU2t/2/

Answer №2

To solve this issue, you could consider enclosing it in a third div and setting the height of your two existing divs to either height: auto or height: 100%.

Answer №3

Change the display property of the parent element with the class .main to table, and set the display property of its child elements with classes .right and .left to table-cell.

Answer №4

In my opinion, forget about the unnecessary css and go with a traditional table design
