What steps can I take to modify this HTML code so that my Tumblr background does not repeat and covers the entire page?

body {
color: #1a1a1a;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
line-height: 19px;

background: url('http://www.totallylayouts.com/backgrounds/hipster/triangle_in_the_woods.jpg')

no-repeat top left scroll;

Even after attempting to add background-size: 100% 100%, it had no effect....

Answer №1

Referenced from http://css-tricks.com/perfect-full-page-background-image/

An effective CSS-only solution that adapts to any screen size seamlessly, eliminating any excess white space:

 html {
  background: url(images/bg.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed;
  -webkit-background-size: cover;
  -moz-background-size: cover;
  -o-background-size: cover;
  background-size: cover;
}

Answer №2

To prevent it from repeating, you can use background-repeat:no-repeat;. However, achieving a background that fills the entire page may not be possible. You can adjust the size of the background using background-size: 0px 0px;

Here is an example:

body {
    color: #1a1a1a;
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 12px;
    line-height: 19px;

    background-image: url('http://www.totallylayouts.com/backgrounds/hipster/triangle_in_the_woods.jpg')
    background-repeat:no-repeat;
    background-size:1920px 1080px;

If you're facing compatibility issues with kunoo's solution (perhaps due to the need to support older browsers like Internet Explorer), there's an alternative worth considering - the backstretch jQuery plugin. You can find more information about this plugin here. Personally, I've found it to be quite useful and reliable. It dynamically adjusts a background image to fit the entire screen, even when the window is resized.
