I have a question out of curiosity, rather than seeking a solution to a specific issue.
Can you explain how frameworks such as Angular manage to keep CSS contained within a component and prevent it from spreading across the entire webpage?

Angular 2 incorporates the ShadowDOM concept, enabling CSS to be encapsulated within a component.
By default, Angular 2 utilizes "emulation," which means it simulates a ShadowDOM implementation for better compatibility with older browsers. It can also be configured to use the native browser implementation, although this only functions if supported by the browser.
Interestingly, it is possible to completely disable ShadowDOM in Angular 2, resulting in CSS leakage as anticipated.
By default, when using ViewEncapsulation.Emulated
, CSS is injected into the <head>
section for all components. Each component tag and its template elements are assigned a unique CSS class, and Angular2 rewrites the selectors of the styles before injecting them into <head>
, ensuring that they only apply to the specific component where they were defined.
Alternatively, if ViewEncapsulation.Native
is specified for browsers with native shadow DOM support, the styles are inserted directly within the component itself.
For browsers lacking native shadow DOM support but with webcomponents polyfills loaded, the behavior mirrors that of ViewEncapsulation.Emulated
in Angular2.
