What is the best way to include an alt attribute in an icon tag that also contains a href attribute?

I want to ensure that if the icon fails to load, an alternate text will be displayed as a link to the intended destination.

This particular icon is from the Font Awesome library.

replace the alt tag with this span tag in case fontawesome is not functioning properly...
