What is the best way to create a website cover image with a set height and a width that expands?

Is there a way to have a cover image on a web page that expands in width as the screen size increases, but maintains a fixed height?

I found a page with the desired effect that I want to replicate:

Below is the link to my page where I want to implement this feature:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Answer №1

That could be a container with a defined height, featuring a sizable background-image where the background-position is set to either 50% or center, and the background-size adjusted to cover or auto 100% (for older web browsers).

div.wide{
    height:500px;
    background-image: url(path/to/big.jpg);
    background-position: 50%;
    background-size: cover;
}

Answer №2

Expanding on Isaac Lubow's suggestion, I would include an overflow rule to ensure the image is contained within its designated area:

    div.wide {
    height:500px;
    background-image: url(path/to/big.jpg);
    background-position: 50%;
    background-size: cover;
    overflow:hidden;
}

By adding overflow: hidden;, you can prevent the image from spilling over. Whether this is necessary depends on your specific configuration.

Answer №3

To maintain the set height of 500px while filling the width of the viewing window, you could alternatively set the width to 100vw.
