What could be the reason for the items not appearing on my bootstrap toggler?

I recently started working with Bootstrap version 5 and I'm trying to implement a navbar toggler. However, when I click on the toggler button, no content is displayed. Here is the code I'm using:

    <nav class="navbar navbar-expand-lg navbar-light bg-light">
        <div class="container-fluid">
          <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarTogglerDemo01" aria-controls="navbarTogglerDemo01" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
            <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
          </button>
          <div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="navbarTogglerDemo01">
            <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Hidden brand</a>
            <ul class="navbar-nav me-auto mb-2 mb-lg-0">
              <li class="nav-item">
                <a class="nav-link active" aria-current="page" href="#">Home</a>
              </li>
              <li class="nav-item">
                <a class="nav-link" href="#">Link</a>
              </li>
              <li class="nav-item">
                <a class="nav-link disabled" href="#" tabindex="-1" aria-disabled="true">Disabled</a>
              </li>
            </ul>
            <form class="d-flex">
              <input class="form-control me-2" type="search" placeholder="Search" aria-label="Search">
              <button class="btn btn-outline-success" type="submit">Search</button>
            </form>
          </div>
        </div>
      </nav>

I'm currently learning how to use Bootstrap and wanted to create a responsive navbar using the navbar-toggler for small devices. However, when I click on the toggler, nothing appears on the screen.

This is what I see: https://i.sstatic.net/FgUVl.png

Answer №1

Your HTML markup looks correct and should display the navigation panel when the toggle button is clicked.

It seems like the Bootstrap JavaScript file is not properly included on your page, which is why the panel is not responding to the button click. Make sure to add the Bootstrap JavaScript file to your page for the panel to work as expected.

Your implementation is solid, but you forgot to properly integrate bootstrap5 ;-) The official documentation states:

Make sure to include Bootstrap’s CSS and JS. Insert the tag in the for our CSS, and the tag for our JavaScript bundle (which includes Popper for dropdown positioning, poppers, and tooltips) before the closing </body>.

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
    <title>Bootstrap demo</title>
    <link href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="a2c0cdcdd6d1d6d0c3d2e2978c908c928fc0c7d6c393">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-0evHe/X+R7YkIZDRvuzKMRqM+OrBnVFBL6DOitfPri4tjfHxaWutUpFmBp4vmVor" crossorigin="anonymous">
  </head>
  <body>
    <h1>Hello, world!</h1>
    <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="f3919c9c878087819283b3c6ddc1ddc3de91968792c2">[email protected]</a>/dist/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js" integrity="sha384-pprn3073KE6tl6bjs2QrFaJGz5/SUsLqktiwsUTF55Jfv3qYSDhgCecCxMW52nD2" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
  </body>
</html>

You also have the option to add Popper and our JS separately. If dropdowns, popovers, or tooltips are not in use, you can save some space by excluding Popper.

<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@popperjs/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="51323e233411637f60607f64">[email protected]</a>/dist/umd/popper.min.js" integrity="sha384-Xe+8cL9oJa6tN/veChSP7q+mnSPaj5Bcu9mPX5F5xIGE0DVittaqT5lorf0EI7Vk" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="73111c1c07000701120333465d415d435e1116071242">[email protected]</a>/dist/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-kjU+l4N0Yf4ZOJErLsIcvOU2qSb74wXpOhqTvwVx3OElZRweTnQ6d31fXEoRD1Jy" crossorigin="anonymous"gt;</script>

Your code snippet will perform correctly once it is correctly integrated...:

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">

<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
  <title>Bootstrap demo</title>

</head>

<body>

  <nav class="navbar navbar-expand-lg navbar-light bg-light">
    <div class="container-fluid">
      <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#navbarTogglerDemo01" aria-controls="navbarTogglerDemo01" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
        <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
      </button>
      <div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="navbarTogglerDemo01">
        <a class="navbar-brand" href="#">Hidden brand</a>
        <ul class="navbar-nav me-auto mb-2 mb-lg-0">
          <li class="nav-item">
            <a class="nav-link active" aria-current="page" href="#">Home</a>
          </li>
          <li class="nav-item">
            <a class="nav-link" href="#">Link</a>
          </li>
          <li class="nav-item">
            <a class="nav-link disabled" href="#" tabindex="-1" aria-disabled="true">Disabled</a>
          </li>
        </ul>
        <form class="d-flex">

Make sure to add the Bootstrap js file to your project. Without it, the nav bar functionality may not work as expected.
