Inline elements are guided by an invisible linebox which dictates their vertical position relative to each other. This relationship between inline elements affects the box itself.
Setting the vertical-align of an image to "middle" shifts the linebox to the center of its container. This is because the image is larger than the linebox, causing the box to move when the property is changed (if the image were smaller, it would move instead).
Removing the vertical align setting on the image resets it to "baseline", realigning the baselines of the linebox and image. This results in the linebox sitting at the bottom of the parent container, shifting the content contained within downward.
