Ways to prevent websites from switching to landscape mode

Is there a way to prevent landscape mode on my website and restrict users to portrait mode, especially for devices with screen widths below 777px? I have custom headers that take up fixed position space of around 100px on the screen.

If it is possible to achieve this, please let me know how. I tried using some code that was suggested as a solution for this issue, but encountered a problem like the one shown in this screenshot.

Answer №1

Implement css media queries to display a prompt for rotating the device:

#rotate {
  display: none;
  z-index: 100;
  position: fixed;
}

@media (orientation: portrait) {
  #rotate {
    display:block;
  }
}

<div id="rotate">
  Kindly rotate your device
</div>

Answer №2

One possible solution could involve implementing the following code snippet:

@media (orientation: landscape) and (max-width: 777px) {
  html {
    transform: rotateZ(90deg);
  }
}

However, enhancing user experience by displaying a message prompting to rotate the device may prove to be a more effective approach. Utilizing portrait mode can sometimes be challenging for certain individuals.

Answer №3

If you're looking for a solution to this issue, consider using JavaScript. To test the functionality, simply insert the code snippet below onto your webpage:

window.onresize = function (event) {
    console.log('resizing!');
    console.log(`Current size: w${window.innerWidth} h${window.innerHeight}`);
    if(window.innerWidth < 777) {
        // Perform an action
    }
    if(window.innerWidth > window.innerHeight) {
        // Perform another action
    }
}

The output of window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight is in numerical form, allowing for mathematical operations.
