Using CSS3 gradient in grey instead of white

I came across an amazing example by Chris Coyier showcasing a "read more" button. I attempted to replicate this by creating a simple fadeout effect from white to transparent, but unfortunately, I ended up with a grey gradient instead.

You can view my attempt here: http://jsfiddle.net/9adZ3/

If anyone has suggestions on how to fix this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Answer №1

In his article, Chris Coyier points out that the keyword "transparent" actually refers to rgba(0,0,0,0), which is transparent black. So, when you create a gradient from white to transparent black, the result appears as gray.

If you want a transition from white to rgba(255,255,255,0), you'll get transparent white instead.

Check out this demo for reference: http://jsfiddle.net/FnfTA/

Answer №2

#fade {
    width: 50px;
    height: 25px;
    margin: 0 0 0 -50px;

    //specifically for mozilla browsers
    background-image:-moz-linear-gradient(center bottom , #ebebeb, #999999);

    //crafted for chrome users
    background: #F6F6F6 -webkit-gradient(linear, 0% 0%, 0% 100%, from(#999999), to(#ebebeb));

    // suitable for Internet Explorer
    filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr='#999999',endColorstr='#ebebeb');
}
