Using CSS to resize an element with both dimensions while maintaining its

Is it feasible to preserve a 1:1 aspect ratio on a div element using the CSS resize property?

This particular illustration lacks an aspect ratio. Do you have any recommendations?

Answer №1

If you want to resize an element horizontally and then allow for vertical resizing using JavaScript, you can achieve this by setting the CSS property to "resize:horizontal" and implementing a script:

Here is how you can set it up in your markup:

<div id="elementID" style="width:200px;height:200px;background:#000;resize:horizontal;overflow:hidden;"></div>

In your JavaScript file, you can use the following code:

jQuery('#elementID').mousemove(
    function(e){
        var elem = jQuery(e.target);
        elem.height(elem.width());
    }
)

You can view a live example here.

One limitation of this approach is that there isn't a built-in event for tracking element resizing. As a workaround, you may need to periodically check the size of the element to ensure accurate results. In the provided example, we are observing the mousemove event, but keep in mind that this method may not be foolproof as users can move the mouse out of the element while resizing.
