Tips for adding a red dot at the top-right corner of a necessary HTML input label, similar to an asterisk

Is there a way to replace the asterisk with a dot in an HTML label for a required input? The dot should be positioned in the top-right corner similar to where the asterisk would typically be.

Answer №1

To make sure the label is affected by the required attribute in the input element, place the label after the input element.

In this code snippet, a small red circle is added at the end of the label using a pseudo-element after selector on the label when the input includes the required attribute (utilizing CSS attribute selector feature).

label {
  position: relative;
}

input[required]+label::after {
  content: '';
  width: 10px;
  height: 10px;
  top: -5px;
  border-radius: 50%;
  position: relative;
  background: red;
  display: inline-block;
}
<input required><label>I am the label</label>

Keep in mind that if you want to modify the layout, such as having the label before or above the input, additional positioning adjustments will be needed.

Answer №2

It is recommended to utilize either before or after as necessary.

label.required:before {
    content: ". ";
}
