There is a lack of CSS import in the HTML document

I have organized my files in the following structure:

- index.html - css/styles.css

This is the HTML code I am using:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en>
<head>
  <title>Bootstrap Case</title>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/styles.css" />
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css">
  <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
  <script src="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>

<div class="panel panel-default">
  <div class="panel-heading">Panel heading without title</div>
  <div class="panel-body">
    Panel content
  </div>
</div>

<div class="panel panel-default">
  <div class="panel-heading panel-heading-custom">
    <h3 class="panel-title">Panel title</h3>
  </div>
  <div class="panel-body">
    Panel content
  </div>
</div>

</body>
</html>

The contents of `css/styles.css` are as follows:

@import url('//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/css/bootstrap.min.css');

.panel-default > .panel-heading-custom {
    background: #ffaa00; color: #aaa;
}

However, I am facing an issue where the panel color does not change at all. Interestingly, it works fine on this jsfiddle and I have copied and pasted the same code.

Answer №1

To ensure proper styling, make sure to include the files in this specific order.

 <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css">
 <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/styles.css" />

The styles.css should be placed after the bootstrap.min.css file because bootstrap's CSS takes precedence over custom stylesheets.

Answer №2

It appears that Bootstrap is taking precedence over your custom CSS files. To resolve this issue, ensure that in the head section of your HTML document, you include bootstrap.css before styles.css. Additionally, make sure to use the identical selector in styles.css for the element you wish to override.

Answer №3

Simply update the class from .panel-heading-custom to .panel-heading

@import url('//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/css/bootstrap.min.css');
.panel-default > .panel-heading {
  background: #000;
  color: #fff;
}
