The straightforward onclick action only functioned once

Looking for assistance: Can someone explain why this code snippet isn't functioning properly? It seems that the increment is only happening once.

var player = document.getElementById("player");
var button = document.getElementById("button");

function moveDown(object) {
    object.style.top += 32;
}

button.onclick = function() {
    moveDown(player);
}

Answer №1

Example: http://jsfiddle.net/SrQUh/1/

var avatar = document.getElementById("avatar");
var trigger = document.getElementById("trigger");

function moveAvatarDown(obj) {
  obj.style.top = parseInt(obj.style.top || 0) + 32 + 'px';
}

trigger.onclick = function() {
    moveAvatarDown(avatar);
}

Answer №2

Consider utilizing:

object.style.top = parseInt(object.style.top, 10) + 32;

as an alternative to

object.style.top+=32;

(Also verify that player's position is defined as either absolute or relative)
