The libmagic library detects the MIME type of files as text/plain rather than text/javascript or

In my web project's interface, I am using libmagic to retrieve the MIME type of a file. Interestingly, I am encountering issues where css and js files are being identified as text/plain MIME type.

When using Chromium, the following warnings are displayed:

Resource interpreted as Stylesheet but transferred with MIME type text/plain: "http://localhost:8000/jquery-ui.css".
Resource interpreted as Script but transferred with MIME type text/plain: "http://localhost:8000/jquery.timers.js".

Upon analyzing the Http dialog:

alex@alex-laptop ~ $ nc localhost 8000
GET /ui.css HTTP/1.1

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Connection: close
Content-Length: 699
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2012 11:41:48 GMT

...

How can I resolve this issue?

Answer №1

To handle MIME types effectively, you must follow a similar approach to Apache: refer to a database of extensions and turn to libmagic as a backup if needed.

When it comes to Text and XML files, libmagic may struggle to accurately identify them due to their generic nature. This tool is designed to determine file types based on a few bytes, making it challenging to distinguish between CSS and JavaScript. Additionally, determining specific XML file types like XHTML, SVG, or XSLT can be complex for libmagic, as it requires sophisticated rules beyond its capabilities.

Answer №2

Uncertain of the reason for needing this information.

Typically, file types can be identified by their extensions or directories.

The simplest approach would be to verify the extension, although it seems that may not be feasible in this case.

You could create a personalized function to analyze and recognize ECMA and CSS:

if (mime==text/plain) { mime = my_parser(data); }

Alternatively, you can utilize a validator to confirm if the file is valid CSS or JS.

Another option is to craft your own magic pattern file where you can define your specifications – although it may be prone to errors;

For instance (in a simplified form)…

File my.magic:

0        search/4096    =function\
>&0      search/128     =)
>>&0     search/128     ={              JavaScript
!:mime   application/javascript

0        search/4096    ={
>&0      search/512     =transition-    CSS3
!:mime   text/css

0        search/4096    ={
>&0      search/512     =background:    CSS
!:mime   text/css

0        search/4096    ={
>&0      search/512     =color:         CSS
!:mime   text/css

Compile it afterwards:

$ file -C -m my.magic

Then use:

$ file -im my.magic.mgc some_file
