The Bootstrap toast fails to appear on the screen

I am currently working on a website project using HTML with bootstrap and javascript. I have been attempting to include a toast feature by implementing the code provided on the bootstrap website:

<div class="toast" role="alert" aria-live="assertive" aria-atomic="true">
  <div class="toast-header">
    <img src="..." class="rounded mr-2" alt="...">
    <strong class="mr-auto">Bootstrap</strong>
    <small class="text-muted">11 mins ago</small>
    <button type="button" class="ml-2 mb-1 close" data-dismiss="toast" aria-label="Close">
      <span aria-hidden="true">&times;</span>
    </button>
  </div>
  <div class="toast-body">
    Hello, world! This is a toast message.
  </div>
</div>

However, despite my efforts, the toast element does not appear as expected in the layout. It seems to create a gap between the navigation and carousel sections, which was not intended. You can see the issue illustrated in this image: https://i.sstatic.net/rTRk0.png

To troubleshoot the problem, I have made sure to import all necessary scripts from the bootstrap website:

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-ggOyR0iXCbMQv3Xipma34MD+dH/1fQ784/j6cY/iJTQUOhcWr7x9JvoRxT2MZw1T" crossorigin="anonymous">
    <script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.3.1.slim.min.js" integrity="sha384-q8i/X+965DzO0rT7abK41JStQIAqVgRVzpbzo5smXKp4YfRvH+8abtTE1Pi6jizo" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
    <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/popper.js/1.14.7/umd/popper.min.js" integrity="sha384-UO2eT0CpHqdSJQ6hJty5KVphtPhzWj9WO1clHTMGa3JDZwrnQq4sF86dIHNDz0W1" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>
    <script src="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/js/bootstrap.min.js" integrity="sha384-JjSmVgyd0p3pXB1rRibZUAYoIIy6OrQ6VrjIEaFf/nJGzIxFDsf4x0xIM+B07jRM" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>

In addition, I have included the following Javascript snippet in my script file:

$('.toast').toast(option)

Despite these steps, the toast functionality still eludes me. If anyone has any insights or solutions, I would greatly appreciate your help :)

It is important to choose from the valid options, such as

show, hide, or a callback function
. For more information, refer to - https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.2/components/toasts/.

$('.toast').toast('show');
<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>

<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<div class="toast" role="alert" aria-live="assertive" aria-atomic="true">
  <div class="toast-header">
    <img height="200px" width="200px" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f9/Phoenicopterus_ruber_in_S%C3%A3o_Paulo_Zoo.jpg" class="rounded mr-2" alt="...">
    <strong class="mr-auto">Bootstrap</strong>
    <small class="text-muted">11 mins ago</small>
    <button type="button" class="ml-2 mb-1 close" data-dismiss="toast" aria-label="Close">
                <span aria-hidden="true">&times;</span>
                </button>
  </div>
  <div class="toast-body">
    Hello, world! This is a toast message.
  </div>
</div>

If you prefer not to automatically close the toast, you can include data-autohide="false".

$('.toast').toast('show')
<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>

<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<div class="toast" data-autohide="false">
  <div class="toast-header">
    <svg class=" rounded mr-2" width="20" height="20" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid slice" focusable="false" role="img">
                    <rect fill="#007aff" width="100%" height="100%" /></svg>
    <strong class="mr-auto">Bootstrap</strong>
    <small class="text-muted">11 mins ago</small>
    <button type="button" class="ml-2 mb-1 close" data-dismiss="toast" aria-label="Close">
                    <span aria-hidden="true">&times;</span>
                  </button>
  </div>
  <div class="toast-body">
    Hello, world! This is a toast message.
  </div>
</div>

<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.3.1/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>

<div class="toast" data-autohide="false">
    <div class="toast-header">
        <svg class=" rounded mr-2" width="20" height="20" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid slice" focusable="false" role="img">
        <rect fill="#007aff" width="100%" height="100%" /></svg>
        <strong class="mr-auto">Bootstrap</strong>
        <small class="text-muted">11 mins ago</small>
        <button type="button" class="ml-2 mb-1 close" data-dismiss="toast" aria-label="Close">
            <span aria-hidden="true">&times;</span>
        </button>
    </div>
    <div class="toast-body">
    Hello, there! Welcome to the toast message.
    </div>
</div>

Don't forget to trigger the toast with " $(".toast").toast('show'); " when the document is fully loaded and ready.

<script>
    $(document).ready(function() {
        $(".toast").toast('show');
    });
</script>

Answer №3

To start, adjust the toast to be fixed at either the top or bottom based on your preference.

<div role="alert" aria-live="assertive" aria-atomic="true" class="toast fixed-top m-5 ms-auto"
    data-bs-autohide="false">
    <div class="toast-header">
        <img src="..." class="rounded me-2" alt="...">
        <strong class="me-auto">Bootstrap</strong>
        <small>11 mins ago</small>
        <button type="button" class="btn-close" data-bs-dismiss="toast" aria-label="Close"></button>
    </div>
    <div class="toast-body">
        Hey there! Here's a message for you in this toast.
    </div>
</div>
<script>
    window.onload = (event) => {
        let myAlert = document.querySelector('.toast');
        let bsAlert = new bootstrap.Toast(myAlert);

        setTimeout(function () {
            bsAlert.show();
        }, 5000);
    };
</script>

Answer №4

Upon attempting this solution, an error in Javascript was encountered stating "Uncaught ReferenceError: bootstrap is not defined", which seems to be causing the toaster from displaying.

The discrepancy I noticed is that I am utilizing bootstrap5 and it seems that JQuery is no longer necessary for bootstrap as it is not included in the base template.

After rendering, the content in the base template includes:

<head>
...
<link crossorigin="anonymous" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="6e0c01011a1d1a1c0f1e2e5b405c405d">[email protected]</a>/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css" integrity="sha384-rbsA2VBKQhggwzxH7pPCaAqO46MgnOM80zW1RWuH61DGLwZJEdK2Kadq2F9CUG65" rel="stylesheet">
...
</head>

<body>
...
<toaster html goes here>
....
<script crossorigin="anonymous" integrity="sha384-kenU1KFdBIe4zVF0s0G1M5b4hcpxyD9F7jL+jjXkk+Q2h455rYXK/7HAuoJl+0I4" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/<a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="9ffdf0f0ebecebedfeefdfaab1adb1ac">[email protected]</a>/dist/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js"></script>
</body

The reason for bootstrap being undefined despite being linked in the JS script is unclear, but it is possible that there may be other errors due to my unfamiliarity with bootstrap. I am relying on the django-bootstrap5 app and all other functionalities appear to be working correctly.
